Between 1867\nand 1871 he designed Dromore and\nGlenbegh Castles in Ireland, before\nturning to more intimate, domestic\nprojects, including artists’ houses at\nBedford Park (with Norman Shaw,\n1875–81) and the White House in\nChelsea (c.1877), created for his close\nfriend James McNeill Whistler.\nAlongside this, Godwin designed\nfurniture, textiles and wallpapers for\nboth private clients and commercial\nproduction. Crafted in ebonised wood, these\npieces reflect Godwin’s progressive\nengagement with Japanese aesthetics\nand his rejection of the\nmass-produced decorative styles of\nhis time.
